Artist Salon: Ellie Lobovits

Join us for a special evening of film and conversation with Ellie Lobovits as we explore what it means to bear witness, the poetry of image-making, Jewish identity, and the ways visual art can be both political and deeply intimate.

Ellie Lobovits is a feminist documentary filmmaker, anthropologist, and cultural observer whose work combines art with social activism and cultural theory. Her research, writing, and filmmaking focuses on borderlands, the body, and feminist stories. Ellie’s lyrical short films explore themes of loss, mortality, the natural world, and memory, and her most recent film, Birth on the Border, is a documentary about childbirth on the U.S.-Mexico border. Ellie holds an MA in Visual Anthropology from San Francisco State.

The Artist Salon aims to provide a local Jewish artist (especially those underrepresented in communal spaces) an intimate forum to share pieces of their work, reflect on their creative process, the connection between their art and their Judaism, and to provide the community with an opportunity to learn about the diverse ways Judaism and art making can be used to process and amplify issues of healing, community and justice.
